Don’t blame bars for tourism fall

I read the story in your last issue where the island’s tourism councillor, Jose Manuel Bermúdez, (left) takes bar and restaurant owners to task for running “tired” establishments that fail to move with the times.
He refers to the bars in Santa Cruz where he walks down the road and says: “The bars have the same tired entertainment, drinks complete with little paper umbrellas.”
Maybe it’s like that in Santa Cruz but if he is interested in promoting tourism, he should concentrate his energies in the south of the island, which is where the majority of tourist go, not Santa Cruz where they go for shopping.

Instead of blaming the bars he should be concentrating on putting pressure on the local councils to improve the areas in the south, especially Los Cristianos where he will find:
*Derelict land within 100m of the seafront has been left for the last 20 years, accumulating rubbish and rats for all the tourists to see.
*Poor lighting along the promenade where holidaymakers have commented that they are scared to walk back to their hotel the Gran Arona after dark.
*Allowing pizza and burger establishments with their chrome and glitter to open in prime seafront locations which spoil the quaintness of Los Cristianos.
*The constant smell of sewage wherever you go.
*Poor policing to combat the handbag thieves and apartment robbers who are active every day in the south of the island.
*Unlike Adeje Council, Arona Council, in its wisdom has allowed open and stinking rubbish containers on the pedestrian walkways (very nice for the tourists!).
Granted, there are certain old Canarian bars which offer limited tapas (if any) and poor furnishing, but these are authentic and if you lose these you will lose the character of the island.
If José Manuel Bermúdez wants to improve tourism for the island he should take his blinkers off and visit the south of the island and not put the blame on the bars but put pressure on the local councils.

The boss needs to work, too

I MUST air my disappointment after a lunchtime visit to Amarillo Golf, a venue that I have always found exceptionally good.
The place was reasonably busy but we were informed by the waitress, who was on her own on duty, that they were short-staffed and she did not normally work on the catering side. Under the circumstances, we felt, she was doing her best.
Then, while we were waiting to be served, another woman came through to the bar and I thought, oh, reinforcements. Not so. This lady just walked off again, totally unconcerned.
The waitress told me this was the owner. So I went to ask her if it would be possible to have some help at the bar and asked if we could have two tonic waters.
The owner looked at me, asked who I was and said she was amazed that I had asked her. I said I was a customer of hers. She walked off and was not seen again. The poor waitress was left to cope as best she could.
I was amazed and found it unbelievable that the owner should show such lack of care for her customers, all of whom were being patient. No one was creating a fuss and I had asked the question of the owner in a calm and polite manner.
This, to say the least, has left a nasty feeling about the Amarillo Club, which is sad because we have always been more than happy with both the service and friendliness of the staff there.
What a shame that we shall not be visiting again, purely due to the attitude of the owner. I feel it would be pontless to write to the owner direct but perhaps, in time, she may learn that being the owner does not preclude her from doing some hard work herself.

No need to miss out on your Burns Night haggis

DOREEN Campbell, who complained in your last Letters column about not being able to find haggis, neeps and tatties on the island for Burns Night couldn’t have asked around or done her homework very well.
I have a bar on the Golf del Sur, on the top square in the San Blas commercial centre and have served up this traditional dish for the past seven years.
I also wear the full kilt outfit, as you can see in this picture, so that old and new customers can see the true Scotsman (that’s for me to know and them to find out!).
Anyway, this year there was not a seat to be had, the same as every other year. And, just to rub salt into Doreen’s wounds, the price for the haggis and all the trimmings including a wee dram of whisky was only €7.95.
So, Doreen, I am so sorry that you missed the celebrations of our great poet but, if you are reading this letter, we can be contacted at www.bigalstenerife.com or by phone on 922 727907 to make sure you get a seat next year.

Elton show was a huge success

I CAN’T understand the torrent of abuse that has been heaped on the organisers of the recent Elton John concert at Adeje Golf.
All right, there were some problems with crowd management and provision of toilet facilities but anybody who has ever been to a major concert, particularly one held in the open air, will know that such things are par for the course.
True fans and concert-goers know to expect some difficulties where so many people are involved.
I well remember being at the Millenium celebrations in Edinburgh and having some difficulty in finding toilets that were not packed to capacity.
As for people pinching seats they had not paid for while those who had paid were left standing, nobody in their right mind could expect the ushers to be able to do much about that with all the crowd control problems any action they took might cause.
The answer would be to get there in good time and claim the seat you have paid for.
As far as I am concerned the organisers did a great job, especially considering the difficulties involved in mounting such a major operation. And the show itself was terrific, with Sir Elton himself finding nothing but praise for both the fans and the organisers.
Perhaps those who complained should compare their experiences with what goes on at every carnival here. At least the Elton show started bang on time, which is more than you can say for the election of the carnival queen in Los Cristianos last week.

PC means perfectly correct

If you have a computer problem and would like to meet a real gentleman and thorough professional who will sort it out promptly, give Steph a call at Witzend, based in Callao Salvaje.
He is refreshingly efficient and courteous. We recommend him and his company very highly indeed. This guy is really worth recommending.
