New league for expats in south

Tenerife’s first six-a-side football league mostly for expatriates is poised to get under way in Adeje.
The idea came about because of the amount of interest generated by the recent International Veteran’s Soccer Sixes, which attracted ex-stars such as Bruce Grobbelaar to Tenerife.
Soccer Experience, organiser of that event, hopes to attract footballers looking to enjoy a competitive game while having some fun and exercise.

Starting date for the new league is Friday, March 14.
Soccer Experience’s Martin Tierney said: “Everyone wants to know when the next tournament will be and cannot wait.”
So Martin came up with the idea of a competitive but fun six-a-side league to keep people interested and fit until the next tournament, hoped to be held in the next few months.
The league will consist of six teams to ensure Martin and his team can keep control and ensure the teams are of a similar level. “Well that’s the plan,” says Martin.
Each squad will have between eight and 10 players with only three under-30s allowed.
The idea behind that is that it will allow mostly veterans to play – with some help from their younger team-mates when it all gets a bit too fast and furious for the veterans.
Matches will be played every Friday between 5.30pm and 8pm, with each team playing one 50-minute game of two 25 minute halves a week, with kick-off at 5.30pm and 7.10pm.
Each team will play each other twice over the next 10 weeks to see who will win the ‘Premiership’.
Martin said the games, like the Soccer Experience training sessions, will be held at the brand new soccer stadium. “We are lucky to have such a place so close at hand in Adeje,” said Martin.
l If you want to enter a team or just sign up as an individual player call Martin on 654 200470 or email to soccer@soccerexperience.com. But hurry because demand is expected to be high.
Also if you are a goalkeeper, Martin could really use your skills at the Soccer Experience football sessions that are held on a Monday afternoon from 3.30 pm. to 5 pm and the Wednesday night football session from 9 pm. to 10.30 pm.

Sad failure at the task of Hercules

CD Tenerife went down 2-1 away to a Hércules side that, by all accounts, clearly deserved the three points after a string of bad results.
The game started for Tenerife with the same line-up as last week’s winning side, with Juan Pablo in goal, Julio Hormiga and Ayoze on the wing and Nino up front.
But the side that so impressed the week before at home never looked like pulling off a similar result.
The only thing of note in a quiet first half was a goal by Hércules, which came on 30 minutes from Sendoa.
Tenerife came right back with a long pass from Oscar Pérez that left Ayoze with just the keeper to beat but he failed to convert.
Three minutes into the second half Tenerife gave their supporters something to cheer about when they equalised off a corner from Julio Hormiga. converted by Ayoze redeemed himself for his missed opportunity in the first half to convert it home.
Tenerife seemed to take heart from the goal and looked to be getting the better of things but the hopes were short lived.
In one of the home side’s few attacking moves, Ion Velez took advantage of some poor marking by Tenerife to make it 2-1 to Hércules after 75 minutes of play and it was game over.
Elsewhere, Málaga kept in touch with leaders Numancia, beating Castellón 3-1, with Hidalgo and Cheli giving them a first half lead.
Although Mario got one back for the visitors from the penalty spot, the home side wrapped it up with a third goal from Eliseu to hand Castellón their first defeat of 2008.
Sevilla Atlético moved level with Sporting Gijón after a last gasp 2-1 victory at home to Córdoba, who must be sorely disappointed not to have come away with a point after Alfaro scored the winner in the 90 minute.
Real Sociedad moved into the top three at the expense of Las Palmas, who were thumped 4-0 in their trip to the mainland.
Díaz de Cerio headed them into an early lead but it was not until later in the second half that a goal from Xabi Prieto and two more from new signing Víctor wrapped things up.
Meanwhile, Elche dropped out of the promotion spot after going down 1-0 to Racing Ferrol, a result that dragged the home side out of the relegation zone.
Cádiz had their new signing Natalio for their 2-1 win over Alavés, with the former Almería forward getting both goals, one either side of half time.
Numancia extended their lead at the top with a 1-0 win over Albacete, Toché getting the only goal to leave the visitors floundering in the relegation zone.
Sporting Gijón continue to dispute the top of the table after a 2-0 win over struggling Xerez, while Celta remain a point behind after beating bottom-of-the-table Poli Ejido 2-1.

Have a ball – if you can pay the price!

The Nou Camp stadium in Barcelona.

Anyone who dreams of being Ronaldinho, stepping out onto the sacred Nou Camp turf, will get a chance to do so this summer. But it comes at a price.
Barcelona is renting out the world famous football stadium for €40,000 a day during the close season.
The idea comes from the club’s marketing department and is aimed at companies that want to reward their employees with a unique experience.
The price includes allowing 35 would-be football stars to take part in a match on the hallowed grass, complete with a first-class referee, and use of the stadium’s PA system to call out the names of the players.
Lucky players will also receive a certificate saying “I played at the Nou Camp” as well as a complete Barcelona strip and cocktails after the game.
Not included in the price is the chance to arrive at the stadium in the official team bus, which will set you back another €800, while playing under floodlights at night will cost another €2,800.
Oh, and if you want the family to come and support you, they will be charged €60 each, although they will get to see the game from the presidential box.
The stadium will be available after May 11, when Barcelona play their last home game of the season, until July 19 when American rocker Bruce Springsteen is due to appear.

Doping case re-opens

A Spanish court has ordered the reopening of Operation Puerto, a doping scandal that implicated some of cycling’s biggest stars.
Spain’s Provincial Court decided to reopen the case after investigative magistrate, Antonio Serrano closed it a year ago without any charges being brought because Spain’s new anti-doping law was not in force when the scandal broke.
Prosecutors appealed the ruling, arguing that doctors administering blood transfusions could have led to health problems for athletes and constituted criminal behaviour.
The case along with other doping scandals has helped cast a shadow over the sport and both the International Cycling Union and the International Olympic Committee had criticised the decision to drop the probe.
The case will now likely be sent back to Serrano.
The scandal broke when Spanish police raided clinics in Madrid and Zaragoza in May 2006 and found bags of frozen blood, transfusion equipment and anabolic steroids.
More than 50 top cyclists have been implicated in the case.
At the heart of the case is sports doctor Eufemiano Fuentes who was arrested at his clinic in Madrid at the time along with several others, accused of providing performance-enhancing services to cyclists.
Several top riders have been linked to the case including the 2006 Giro d’Italia winner, Ivan Basso and 1997 Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich.
Only Ivan Basso has been sanctioned in the affair and is serving a two-year ban for drug abuse.
Both were among nine riders excluded from the 2006 tour de France after being implicated in the scandal.
Basso was initially cleared of involvement but his case was reopened after bags reportedly containing his blood were uncovered.
Last year’s Tour champion, Alberto Contador, has also been linked to the case but has denied involvement.
IOC president Jacques Rogge has said he wants the case files to be made public to his organisation and any other international federations that might request it.

Fl chance for Spanish youth

THE Williams F1 racing team looks set to move its testing set-up away from its UK base to Spain in a deal that could give Spanish youngsters their break into the top flight.
According to reports in the Spanish press, the Grove-based team is close to reaching an agreement with the local authority to base the team near the Valencia Circuit but no exact location has yet been agreed.
A spokesman for Williams said: “The idea is to base the test team in Spain, so saving a lot of money and time transferring personnel and machinery back and forth between England and Spain, which is where most of our testing is done anyway.”
In return, as part of the deal, young Spanish drivers will be given the opportunity to test-drive Williams F1 cars, with 19-year-old Dani Clos, last year’s F3 ace, expected to be first in the queue.
Clos spent a lot of time in the Williams pit area during the recent Barcelona testing.
Williams apparently explored the possibility of a new base at the circuit de Catalunya but was unable to reach agreement on financial terms.
