EARLY BIRD HOME-OWNERS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS

* Presents for president Pearl

THE Swallows group in the island’s south flocked together for its 20th anniversary with a celebration dinner for more than 100 members last week.
The club, set up by six friends in 1985, paid tribute to its president and founder member Pearl Lowe at the event with the presentation of a watch and flowers.
The group, which now boasts more than 600 members, has been of great help in helping British homebuyers to settle into Tenerife and offers its members a wide range of activities including card nights, walking, golf, dancing, needlework and painting.
One hundred and thirty club members enjoyed a night of speeches, dance, quiz and presentations at the renowned Guaracurumba Restaurant in Guaza, Arona, on Friday night.
President and guest of honour, Pearl Lowe, 83, from Las Americas, told Homes in the Sun: “I don’t need the gifts and accolades to know what I have done.”
Pointing at a packed dance floor, she added: “That is what I have done. It’s about friends and companionship. All these people live in Tenerife, but need each other for activity.”
Many were disappointed not to be able to attend the night that was booked out well in advance.
The Swallows earned their name as many of the first expatriates in Tenerife migrated between their homes in Britain and Tenerife to enjoy better weather in the winter months.
The organisation quickly grew into a phenomenon that now encompasses all people travelling seasonally between the UK and the Canaries.
