What EU subsidies mean to you

YOUNG people don’t know how much the EU is worth to them, according to a recent study.
But while the 18-30 generation remain clueless as to where European subsidies end up, older members of the population who witnessed the benefits of their introduction are the most widely informed.
More than half the people interviewed between 45 and 65 years old were aware of where EU funding ended up and believed it had a positive effect on the island’s prosperity.
But the study made by the Insular Area of Institutional Relations found most areas of the island were in the dark as to where grant money was being spent.
More than one third of the population said EU funding had little or no economic effect on the island’s productivity.
And people in La Laguna were the most pessimistic, with over 65 per cent believing subsidies were making no difference and would soon dry up.
Nearly a third of those questioned thought that most of the money is invested in infrastructure while just eight per cent thought the money went on agriculture.
Men are more pessimistic than women when it comes to future aid, with 70 per cent sure that aid will reduce or disappear in the future, compared to just half the women interviewed.
Angel Llanos, The island government’s advisor on institutional relations, said, “The contributions we have received directly or indirectly from the European Union have decisively influenced our development in the last few years but, somehow or other, the government has not been able to get this across to the public.
“That is why there is much work to be done to make people aware of the importance of this aid.”

Pyramides success

A SERIES of property exhibitions in Los Cristianos has proved a hit with tourists.
Agents at the Homes of Tenerife and Fuerteventura Exhibition in the Pyramides of Arona, Los Cristianos, reported strong turnouts at the fair.
With many new Fuerteventura developments on show to the Tenerife public for the first time, one agent described the exhibition as: “A simple but groundbreaking idea which enhances the buyer’s choice of home.”
Diego Cano, of Key Properties, added: “The location of the pyramid, between Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas, makes it the perfect venue for this kind of exhibition.”
The property market continues every Thursday throughout December.

Fast start for Palm Gardens

THE exclusive Palm Gardens resort in Amarilla Golf is set to sell in record time, like its sister resort did just weeks ago in the golf haven.
Vendors of the complex have already shifted six of the homes since the release of Palm Gardens two weeks ago.
Palm Ridge, a development of 18 villas and 25 apartments, has almost sold out, but Palm Gardens, a complex of 56 two- and three-bedroom apartments, has made a faster start.
Expectations are also high for the forthcoming resort Golf Island Villas with detached and semi-detached townhouses on offer. Prices are expected to be in the region of €550,000.
l A LARGE plot of land behind the exclusive resort of Amarilla Golf has been earmarked for council houses.
Homeowners in the 18-hole golf village have expressed concern but local politicians called for residents to remain calm about it, revealing that only 66 homes will be built in the mini-estate, which is aimed at helping first-time buyers into Tenerife's lucrative market.
