Welcome to the inland white beach |

| *Paul and Elena – taking up an offer they couldn’t refuse. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
THE
first white sand beach on the west coast is about to take shape –
two miles away from the sea.It will be one of the big attractions in the totally renovated San Francisco Sports Club overlooking Playa de la Arena on the west coast. Estate agent, Paul Ruane and his wife, Elena, bought the popular club with its restaurant, tennis courts and bowling green from developer Jens Fulda, who masterminded the entire San Francisco homes and commercial centre complex six years. They take over today, December 1, and aim to have the centre up and running in time for Christmas, renamed as the San Francisco Sports and Beach Club. “It may sound daft to have a white sand beach so far from the shore but it’s just the kind of thing people want,” said Paul. “Kids love it and their parents appreciate it much more than the black sand around our coasts.” The beach, 230m3 of it, will replace the under-used bowling green and come adorned with seating and straw beach umbrellas in Indonesian style, where people can drink close to the existing pool and snack on sandwiches and delicatessen-style food from the nearby bistro restaurant. “I know a lot of people are saying I’ll soon be building houses on it,” said Paul, “but it’s not true. “After being an estate agent for 27 years I have been looking for something really challenging and this is it. “When Mr Fulda made us an offer we couldn’t refuse we just jumped at it. And the good thing is, we live in San Francisco so it’ll be a great place to have breakfast.” The San Francisco club has been run by three different management teams in its six years of existence but they have all found it a struggle to attract residents and holidaymakers away from the centre of nearby Los Gigantes. The most recent proprietors had begun to build a reputation but still faced a reluctance from people to travel out of the area’s main tourist centre. But Paul sees a long-term opportunity to capitalise on huge developments taking place just across the main road from the club. Immediately opposite a development of some 400 apartments is rapidly taking shape and just up the road close to another 200 are springing up. Both are expected to be completed by the end of 2007. And immediately below them will soon be a hotel of 530 bedrooms. All are within five minutes walk from the club. And then there are the established owners in the San Francisco development itself – all of whom are targeted by Paul’s dream beach and bistro. “The future is bright out there,” says Paul. “We aim to appeal to the kind of people with cosmopolitan tastes that we expect to move into the area, so we are redoing the place in Indonesian decor more or less throughout and offering healthy food during the day. English breakfasts will be available but we expect our customers to go for the delicatessen style foods that will appeal to a wide range of nationalities. The international feel will be bolstered by the choice of staff, who are already lined up. In the kitchen will be Marilyn Goldsmith, formerly owner and chef of the highly rated Beechey’s Restaurant, Puerto Santiago, but Spanish and German are also numbered among the staff of 10. Opening from 9am to midnight, the San Francisco Sports and Beach Club aims to provide, in Paul’s words, “a laid back, quiet and relaxing lifestyle where people can relax and enjoy life in the sun with afforable luxury”. For him, this new challenge will be harking back almost 20 years, to when he ran the popular Moonlight Restaurant in the Fulda-owned Oasis, Los Gigantes. Then the property boom took off and he got into estate agency in a big way. He and Elena will be bringing their catering experience to bear in this new enterprise, maintaining a hands-on approach to the business that will be virtually on their doorstep. “I want it to be a nice local pub with its lounge bar and bistro, combined with sports facilities that will appeal to all,” said Paul. “After all, it’s my neighbours I’m thinking of.” |
